National Trail Mix Day

On August 31, National Trail Mix Day is an annual event that is observed on hikes around the world. The mix was created as a healthy snack that could be carried along on hikes.

Some claim that the trail mix was invented in 1968 by two California surfers who mixed peanuts and raisins together for an energy snack. However, the planned meals were described in Jack Kerouac's book The Dharma Bums, written by Jack Kerouac's, in 1958, the two main characters' description of the planned meals in preparation for their hiking trip is included.

Sometimes referred to as "Gorp" in the Trail mix, but it is also referred to as "Gorp."
