On November 16th, 1902, Clifford Berryman published a cartoon of the event in the Washington Post, and the caricature became an instant classic.

Teddy Roosevelt's cartoon and the cub inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom. He invented a new toy and even had a name in mind. President Roosevelt told Michtom that Michtom would request permission to name the new toy a "Teddy Bear."

Following the introduction of the Teddy Bear, a series of popular characters was followed.

Teddy Bear Radar from Sesame Street named him his Teddy Bear Radar. Pooky, the lasagna loving cat on Garfield the Cat Day, was armed with Pooky, his lovable scapegoat.
