We began honoring each state in the order they were born in the union, beginning with Hawaii and ending with Hawaii on Independence Day. We've chosen a small piece of each state's past, foods, and the people who make up the state.
As we approach the end of the original 13 colonies, National North Carolina Day honors the 12th state to join the Union as we near the 12th state to join the Union.

The first state to vote for independence from the British at the first Continental Congress was Tar Heel. North Carolina refused secession from the Union before the Civil War. Even after other states' signed pledges to secede, the state was vehemently opposed to partitioning the country as a whole. Eventually, political opinion shifted, and the state was compelled to join the Confederacy, and the country was forced to join the Confederacy.
