A mule is a cross between a male donkey (jack) and a female horse, which is a hybrid cross. The animal inherits characteristics from both parents as a hybrid.. The mule has the ability, intelligence, patience, perseverance, endurance, staminance, sure-footedness, and even the donkey's temper. The mule inherits the mule's beauty, athletic ability, perseverance, vigor, and speed from the horse. In addition, mules seem to require less food than a horse of similar size.
According to the American Mule Museum, the American Mule Museum is on display.
- Donkeys were brought to America by early explorers, but they were very small
- In America, George Washington played a vital role in the origins of the mule population. He understood the importance of the sturdy animal in agriculture and became the first American breeder
- Washington wanted to produce the best mules possible, but he ran into a significant obstacle: the Spanish government had banned the import or exportation of the popular Andalusian donkey. Washington wrote to King Charles of Spain, requesting permission to purchase good quality breeding stock. A ship docked in Boston harbor in October of 1785 carrying a King Charles gift to George Washington was docked in October of 1785 – two fine jennies and a 4-year old Spanish jack, named more appropriately, "Royal Gift." The Spanish king's royal gift to the American mule is credited with the creation of the American mule. It's today that it's the start of a dynasty that "reshaped the entire landscape of the country"
