Speak Up For Service Day, October 30th, recognizes the importance of young people to be actively involved in community service. The good deeds of young people go unnoticed by their families too often.. The forgotten are acknowledged on Service Day, Speak Up For Service Day. It serves as a reminder to others that young people are integral to their families and their communities.

Each year, the Speak Up For Service public speaking competition is held in conjunction with the North Dakota State Lions Convention. Other Lions Clubs and Districts throughout North America sponsor similar public speaking competitions. Young people give their take on current events.. In addition, they discuss Lions' contributions to making the world a better place.

Speak out about service initiatives in your neighborhood.. Recognize the youth in your neighborhood's programs for the services they promote and initiate. Our communities flourish as a result of their hard work. We give them credit for their sacrifice. Many organizations also encourage youth to participate. Youth are also encouraged to participate in these activities. As the young people in your household's life become involved, their confidence will rise as a result.' The national speak up for service day has risen in service day history for the first time in history

In 2014, the Mandan Lions Club established National Speak Up For Service Day, which was held on a Saturday in Mandan.

The history of the Speak Up For Service Project began in 2003. In honor of Laura Christensen Espejo's birthday, the Fargo, ND, Lions Club launched a public speaking competition for area high school students. Laura devoted her life to improving the health care services available to the less fortunate in Fargo and Peru, Lucho's home country. Lion Robert Littlefield, Littlefield, was in charge of the competition on the local level. While serving as District Governor from 2010-2011, he soon announced it as a statewide initiative.

In 2010, the Lions Club hosted its first annual Lions Speak Up For Service public speaking competition. In Grand Forks, contestants appeared at the North Dakota State Lions Convention. The contestants were on the North Dakota State Lions Convention. High school students who participated in the competition debate debated topics relating to young people and community service. Brent Johnson, a senior at Shanley High School, was the first-ever Speak Up For Service Competition. Scholarships were given to Johnson and the other contestants for their participation in the competition.
