World diabetes Day is the first world diabetes day in history

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) was established in Amsterdam in 1950. In 1991, the IDF, together with the WHO, established World Diabetes Day. The aim was to raise concerns of the increasing threat of diabetes around the world. The day became one of the official United Nations Days in 2006. Each year, World Diabetes Day is held on November 14th to celebrate Sir Frederick Banting's birthday, who co-discovered insulin in 1922. Today, this day is observed in 170 countries and territories.
