Q. Why is coffee called Joe?
A. No one is 100% sure, but there are several theories.. Governor Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts brought the first one about in a way that came to be known as Reaganomics, and the word gerrymander came from Elbridge Gerry, who came from 1980s economic policy. Joseph Daniels was named Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Secretary Joe forbaded the use of alcohol aboard ship, but the best brew the sailors could drink was coffee. However, since it didn't become common usage for another decade and a half, linguists point to other reasons for calling coffee "joe." For example, the island of Java was famous for growing coffee. We're back to the Navy for more information. The sailors would call the combination a jamoke and then shortened it to joe when combining coffee and chocolate (mocha).
