In the United States, Submarine history has long existed.. David Bushnell built America's first submarine, the Turtle, during the Revolutionary War period. Several attempts to sink British ships were unsuccessful, but no one was able to sink British ships. At the time, the US Navy did not exist, so the Turtle was not the Navy's first submarine at the time, so it wasn't the Navy's first submarine at the time. The USS Alligator was the first known U.S. Navy submarine. It's also the fourth United States Navy ship of that name. During the American Civil War, the Alligator was present in the American Civil War.
Submarine Day is observed in Elsewhere in the world, on March 17th.
