History

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s annual World Book and Copyright Day is an annual event held by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. World Book Day was first celebrated on April 23, 1995, and it is still being celebrated on that day.

On the 23rd of April, the author Miguel de Cervantes' death date, the original idea was a way to honor him. UNESCO decided that the World Book and Copyright Day would be commemorated on April 23rd, as well as the birth or death of several other well-known writers.

"It is our responsibility, everywhere in the world, to combat illiteracy and hunger, as well as protecting the publishing-related professions and professionals," the World Book and Copyright day's founders say.
