National Garden Meditation Day
On May 3rd, National Garden Meditation Day, an annual event, encourages people to take time for one's self and relax.
Meditation can be achieved by gardening, tending to the plants and flowers, or sitting on a bench on a beautiful day in the garden. Those are all ways of meditation. Both can be rejuvenating to the body and a refreshing way to be out in nature.
Meditation and gardening have many health benefits. You get to enjoy the benefits that nature has to offer when you pair it with the outdoor peace of a garden.
- Fresh air – We immediately benefit from being in the fresh air
- Audio therapy – Natural sounds of the birds, a water fountain, or a breeze through the trees – provide a respite from the everyday chaos of television, radio, and other indoors
- The pain of eating vegetables – gardening helps to loosen joints and stretch muscles. However, meditation alone can help to reduce pain
- Vitamin D – A natural (though limited) portion of the sun's bounty keeps us healthy and strong. To minimize the risk of overexposure, wear sunblock or protective clothing
- Enhance sleep – Rest better by connecting with nature. – Rest better sleep – Rest better by connecting with nature. Sleep will come more easily if you spend time either pulling weeds or focusing your attention among the flowers
- Worries begin to fade as our muscles relax and we take deeper, deeper breaths. We can also forget about our worldly worries for a while gardening.
