National Nylon Stocking Day

On National Nylon Stocking Day, we each year recognize the stylish variety and hue on National Nylon Stocking Day.

Many people may not recall ever hearing the term "nylon stockings." A nylon stocking (also known as hose) is a close-fitting, highly elastic garment worn as socks or tights, with variations in color, style, and transparency.

Webbing cloth such as cotton, linen, wool, wool, or silk was used in sewings dating back to the 1890s. Women's stockings were worn for warmth before the 1920s. Women began to wear stockings over their exposed legs as the hemlines of women's dresses increased in the 1920s. After 1940, these 1920s stockings were bare, made first of silk or rayon, then nylon, and nylon after 1940.

In the United States, chemical company DuPont's introduction of nylon in 1939 sparked a high demand for stockings. As nylon stockings became more affordable, durable, and shear, up to 4 million pairs would be sold each day.

Ond, as well as elsewhere, in the world war ii and beyond

On February 11, 1942, as America entered World War II, DuPont halted nylon stocking production and shifted its attention to the manufacture of parachutes, airplane cords, and rope. A mass shortage was exacerbated by a black market for stockings. At the end of World War II, DuPont revived production of the stockings, but was unable to satisfy the demand leading to nylon riots in American stores. In time, DuPont was able to increase its output.

The first pantyhose made its appearance in the 1940s and 1950s. Stockings were sewn to actresses and dancers' briefs, as seen in popular films such as Daddy Long Legs... Unlike stockings, pantyhose did not need a garter belt to hold the stockings up.

Pantyhose were introduced in 1959, providing a cost-effective alternative to stockings that resulted in a decrease in their sales. Pantyhose sales in 1970, for the first time, exceeded stocking revenues, and the same has remained unchanged ever since. Due to the newly invented hold-ups, pantyhose sales dropped slightly in 1987... However, they are still the most hosiery that can be purchased.
