National Earl Day is each year to those with a particular qualification and a genuine passion for achievement. Earl is the day of those legends named Earl. Although the word is getting more popular these days, I hope those who are lucky enough to be so named have earned it.

Earl baltes

Earl Baltes, a bandleader, went from bandleader to dirt race track owner in 1954 when he converted the El dora Ballroom into Eldora Speedway, a quarter-mile dirt track in 1954. He extended the track to its present-day half-mile length by 1958.

By 1962, Baltes began promoting more tracks and events, and Eldora became the most coveted track for sprint cars by 1962. Baltes sponsored some of the top-paying short track events in Ohio and Indiana. Ohio also named a portion of route 118, the Earl Baltes Highway, in honor of the state's.

One year after Baltes died, Eldora Speedway and the events he created are still going strong. Eldora Speedway also hosts other annual events, including the World 100, 1971, and the King's Royal Part of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series..

Earl scruggs

Another Earl was picking his way into bluegrass music history around the time Baltes was making a name for himself. Earl Scruggs, who is best known for his three-fingered banjo picking, was uniquely gifted. Scruggs was paired with Lester Flatt as the Foggy Mountain Boys in his early years. Together, they produced country and bluegrass hits.

In 1969, the Foggy Mountain Boys split, but Scruggs continued playing music with his sons. tv's Influenced by his sons' musical tastes, he became interested in the sound of an electrified banjo.
