National American Red Cross Founder's Day, May 21st, marks the American Red Cross's 100th anniversary. Clara Barton, an 1881 founder of the American Red Cross, became the first president of the group in 1881. She ruled the group for the next twenty-three years.

Barton returned to Europe after the war in 1869, she spent time with the International Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War, and for many years Barton volunteered with the International Red Cross. When returning to the United States, she was determined to bring the Red Cross to America.
