Cupcakes can be traced back to 1796, when Amelia Simmons wrote a note in American Cookery describing "a cake to be baked in small cups." In Eliza Leslie's Receipts cookbook, the first known record of the term cupcake was in 1828 in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats.
Bakers first baked their cupcakes in heavy pottery cups. However, bakers today use a slew of devices at their disposal. Some bakers are still using individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large teacups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes for baking their cupcakes. The muffin or cupcake pan is obviously the most common cupcake pan, but of course, the most popular cupcake tool is the muffin or cupcake pan. Multiple cups are mixed in this handy tool.
Chocolate cupcakes come in a variety of flavors, as well. Of course, there's always the classic chocolate cupcake. But why stop there on a holiday?
