National Gumdrop Day

National Gumdrop Day is commemorated on February 15th, a favorite candy of many; the gumdrop! There is no doubt as to what to do. Try gumdrops and eat as many as you like!

Gumdrops are a delectable, colorful, chewy candy that is first coated with sugar and then coated with gelatin and then coated with sugar. Fruity or spicy are available in a variety of flavors and can either be fruity or spicy. These little candy treats make excellent accents for decorating gingerbread houses and other baked goods.

There are several other ways to use gumdrops aside from enjoying them by the handful.

Percy S. Truesdell, a chemical and candy manufacturer, receives the award for the modern gumdrop. Truesdell converted the once hard, poorly flavored glob of sugar into the smooth, chewy delight we enjoy today, according to articles published after his death in 1948. The chemist changed the consistency of the candy by experimenting with the amount of starch used while at the University of Ohio. He continued to work with the Snyder-Chafee Company until 1915.
