National Moonshine Day

Every June 5th National Moonshine Day is commemorated with a drink with a long tradition of blurring history and the rule of justice, turning ordinary men (and women) into criminals and common criminals into stars.

Prohibition

When they settled in Virginia, the Scotch-Irish's Distilling skills first arrived in the United States.

Temperance laws and prohibition laws were passed in several states before the Civil War, but it wasn't until the turn of the century that the temperance movement took off steam. Over half of the country was dry by the time the 18th Amendment was ratified early in 1919.

Prohibition lasted 13 years. Moonshine was the product of a demand for moonshine, unlike any that may have existed before. Moonshine's overnight success made it a burgeoning success.

Modern moonshine

These days, moonshine in the legal sense has a following. The moonshine is the product of a small-batch distilleries, giving moonshine a new name. For a place on the shelf, bringing moonshine out of the woods and up against other whiskeys. Many are canning jars, celebrating their rich past while still experimenting with flavor and branching out with food pairings similar to wine and beer.

  • Also Lavinia Gilman, a bootlegger, was a bootlegger. She ran a 300 gallon in Montana at 80 years old, and she was still in Montana. However, the judge found her son to be the true perpetrator.
  • During prohibition, there were several ways to transport bootlegged moonshine. A funeral was a convenient way to move the product. Faking a funeral was a simple way to get the product. Many with the badge were hesitant to postpone a funeral procession out of respect for the dead, of course
