National Shortbread Day

On January 6th, the United Kingdom's National Shortbread Day honors a traditional Scottish dish that is loved around the world.

Shortbread is a traditional Scottish dessert that is traditionally made with shortbread.

  • 1 part white sugar
  • 2 parts butter
  • 3 parts flour

Modern recipes depart from the three ingredient rule by splitting the sugar portion into equal portions of granulated sugar and powdered sugar, as well as adding salt. Bakers make shortbread using plain white (wheat) flour. However, some bakers alter the texture by using ground rice or cornflour.

Shortbread is recognized for its crumbly texture, which gives it its name. In a shortbread crumb, it's high-fat content provided by the butter results. Any fat that can be added to give a "short" (crumbly) texture can be added to produce a "short" (crumbly) texture.

The shortbread's invention during the 16th century is lauded by Mary, Queen of Scots, who was preparing often during the 12th century. As it was expensive to make, the sweet cookie was reserved as a luxury for special occasions.

In Shetland (northeast of mainland Britain), they traditionally break a decorated shortbread cake over the head of a new bride's head at the entrance of her new home.
