Iconic legacy

Edward Dee (1924-2019) and his family came from England in 1949 to the United States from England (1924-2019). He was born in England (1924-2019). Dee was born with a candy idea that would help him build his legacy as a third-generation candy manufacturer. Dee founded Ce De Candy Inc. in a rented property with two machines, a wrapping machine and a candy pellet-making machine, starting in a factory in Bloomfield, N.J. In 1959, Dee would relocate his company to Elizabeth, N.J., then to Union, N.J., where the company is now located.

In 2011, the corporation decided to rename Ce De Candy Inc. to Smarties Candy Company. The Dee family has been sole owners of the company for as long as possible, preserving their family's heritage. Jonathan and Michael, Dee's sons, joined the company in the 1970s. The company is now led by the founder's grandchildren, Co-Presidents Sarah Dee, Jessica Dee Sawyer, and Liz Dee, making it a woman-owned business for the first time in history.

Over the years, improvements have been made to manufacturing plants, adding solar power to their NJ candy factory, which reduces half of their energy use, and introducing new Smarties, including Mega Smarties – the largest Smarties roll available.

A sweet future

Education was an important part of Dee's life long before he would immigrate to the United States, and he knew the value of education. He decided to name his candy Smarties to encourage others to never stop learning because of this... To keep his vision, the organization initiated the "Smart Think" campaign in 2013. Smarties has donated more than $250,000 to classrooms in need since then.

Edward Dee's early days were going door to make candy sales clearly paid off. Smarties is a leader in the candy industry, with billions of Smarties rolls per year produced. Today, the Smarties brand continues to be a leader in the candy industry, with billions of Smarties rolls per year.
