## Each year on may 14, it is national underground america day in the United States.
"Unofficial" National Underground America Day, architect Malcolm Wells' "unofficial" National holiday, was established in 1974 by architect Malcolm Wells. "the father of modern earth-sheltered architecture" is Wells (1926 – 2009) is regarded as "the father of modern earth-sheltered architecture." Wells, a writer, illustrator, draftsman, cartoonist, columnist, and solar consultant, did what he preached by living in a modern earth-sheltered building of his own design. As he believed the Earth's surface was "made for living plants, not industrial plants," he took up the challenge of underground architecture.
Wells, who died in 2004, stayed his fight against underground living until the end of his life.
