in 1882 was commemorated on National Winnie the Pooh Day on January 18th, honoring author A. A. Milne's birthday in 1882. He brought the adorable, honey-loving bear to life in his books, which also included his son, Christopher Robin.

Milne's beloved Pooh Bear, as he was affectionally referred to, is a fictional bear based on a black bear named Winnie. Winnie, the author's son, would visit the bear often and named his own teddy bear after her and a swan named Pooh.

This family's friendship inspired a series of books beginning with When We Were Young in 1924. We Were Young was 1924. E.H. Shepard's books were beautifully illustrated by her artist.

The Hundred Acre Woods took them and millions of children through their adventures. Each character in the books had a unique role.. Whether the wisdom of Owl or Rabbit led the group awry or a celebration ensued, the story's characters became popular around the world.

Disney bought the rights to the Winnie-the-Pooh characters in the 1960s, removing the hyphen from Pooh's name.. The illustrations were a little different, as well.

Milne's stories have been translated into over 50 languages and are now considered classic children's stories today.
