In 1672, Hoyle was born in 1672. He began teaching Whist, a card game that was 69 years old, to wealthy high-society residents in London. Whistle is a game that is played by two teams of two players and requires logical reasoning as well as mathematics skills. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the card game was especially popular. Hoyle wrote a book on the topic as well as playing and teaching the game. He sold this book to his card-playing students. "A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist" was his author's title. Before 1864, the card game's rules were considered to be valid until new laws were introduced. These new laws were eventually enforced by card-playing clubs in London and private social clubs in the United States.

Hoyle wrote about the rules and tactics of hundreds of games, including Chess and Backgammon, alongside Whist. Hoyle died on August 29, 1769, at the age of 97.
