International Happy Gose Day - November 17

Gose is a fermented sour wheat beer that first appeared in Goslar, Northern Germany, during the sixteenth century. Gose became more associated with Leipzig in later years. The beer became so popular that it was given waiver from the country's purity law, Reinheitsgebot, that was outlawed. This law provided that German beer could only contain water, barley, yeast, and hops. However, But Gose is also made with malted wheat and coriander. The Goslar River salty water was also used, giving the drink a unique salty and tart taste.

Before WWII, the beer was not made. Gose disappeared for a while after the war but made a comeback in 1949.. Friedrich Wurzler Brauerei is credited with saving Gose and brewing the sour beer until he died. Guido Pfnister, his stepson, then passed on his Gose-making skills to his Gose-making abilities. He continued brewing the beer until the 1960s, but only a few pubs sold the fermented beer. Pfnister died in 1966. Gose didn't appear again until 1986. Gose is a product that is still 400 years old today, with a handful of them in the United States.
