INTERNATIONAL ROMANI DAY

Each year, International Romani Day is always celebrated on April 8th.. The first major international meeting of Romani representatives, held in Chelsfield, near London, is commemorated.

In areas of what is now India and Pakistan, Romani court musicians were first traveling court musicians.

The Romani have their own language and history. They immigrated to Turkey, France, Spain in the Middle Ages. Their history in Spain mixed with Iberian, Jewish, Muslim, and Moorish culture, earning them the name Flamenco. They are one of the most persecuted populations, threatening extinction by both the Nazis and Communists, as well as several local governments in Asia and Africa.

Many Romani Roma in the early 1800s migrated to the United States, Canada, Brazil, and other nations in the Americas. There are an estimated one million Roma in the United States and 800,000 in Brazil; and 800,000 in Brazil.
