Bone marrow cells in certain bones contain blood-forming cells. Blood stem cells make up some of these blood-forming cells. These cells are necessary for the production of new blood cells. Red cells, white cells, and platelets are among the three types of blood cells found in the United States. MDS occurs when there is a disruption in the production of new blood cells.. This often results in a red blood cell shortage, which is also known as anemia. MDS progresses into a rapidly growing tumor of bone marrow cells in some patients. This disorder is known as acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In the United States, up to 20,000 new cases of MDS are recorded each year. Thousands of new cases of MDS are reported each year. According to MDS, 170,000 people in the United States are currently living with MDS. Around the world, there are around 87,000 new cases of MDS each year.
