Ruth Nichols attempted to fly solo across the Atlantic for the first year this year. Had she succeeded, she would have been the first woman to do so. Earhart's flight difficulties brought her a red Lockheed Vega 14 hours and 16 minutes later in Derry, Ireland, 14 hours and 16 minutes later. All in all, the flight was a success. She was the first female pilot to complete the journey. She received the United States Distinguished Flying Cross following Earhart's record-breaking achievement.
