The term milkshake first appeared in print in 1885. During this period, a milkshake is referred to an alcoholic beverage mixed with eggs, whiskey, and other ingredients. Customers were treated to the beverage by Pharmacies as a narcotic and a treat. By 1900, pharmacies began selling this "healthy drink" with either chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla syrup.
