Chocolate pudding is usually made with milk and sugar, chocolate and vanilla, and cornstarch, then thickened with flour or cornstarch. However, some recipes call for eggs when making the pudding, however, some recipes do use eggs. Chocolate pudding is a version of chocolate custard, with starch as a thickener instead of eggs. The 1903 edition of Mary Harris Frazer's Kentucky Receipt Book and Fannie Farmer's Boston Cook Book, as well as the 1918 edition, feature both eggs and flour in the earlier version.

GM (Jello) introduced a chocolate pudding mix as "Walter Baker's Dessert" in 1934. They renamed it "Pickle's Pudding" in 1936, but they renamed it "Pickle's Pudding" again in 1936.

Chocolate pudding can be made and sold in grocery stores, convenience stores, and gas stations. Jell-O by the Kraft Foods Corporation and Hunt's Snack Pack are two of the popular brands.
