Spectacles have existed for about seven centuries, but early versions were only worn by monks and scholars. Eyewear demand soared as well after the invention of the printing press in 1452 and an increase in literacy.
Eyewear today's vision not only enhances our vision, but it also protects it by adding elements of style and personality. Imagine John Lennon's legendary round frames... Is Maverick really Top Gun without his aviators? Is Maverick the Top Gun without his aviators? Harry Caray would not be recognized without his distinctive face-covering frames. Eyewear can identify, outline, and punctuate a personality. It can also be a little clandestine. After all, Clark Kent is without his frames. Though many may have tried, no one wore the dark tortoise shells better than Audrey Hepburn.
Eyewear, obviously, plays a significant role in our lives. It certainly is something to celebrate on National Eyewear Day, from improving vision and safety to offering a variety of style styles.
