In 1900, the first ice cream sandwich sold for a penny in the Bowery neighborhood of New York's Bowery neighborhood. Newspapers never revealed the name of the vendor in journals that appeared around the country. However, the ice cream sandwiched between milk biscuits became a hit. During the summer months, pushcarts sprung up around the city and country. Beachgoers at Atlantic City are shown in early photographs as a result of their ice cream sandwiches costing 1 each.

Recipes for home cooks stuffed the pages once ice cream sandwiches became popular, and home cooks filled the pages. The sandwich layers included everything from angel food and sponge cake to shortbread cookies. The ice cream sandwich was sold by Restaurants as a decadent dessert for visitors. By 1940, supermarkets were selling sandwiches made with crispy wafers.

Jerry Newberg's 1945 invention of the chocolate wafer in a single account. In Pittsburgh, PA, the ice cream maker sold his creation at Forbes Field. The historic location was home to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers at the time.
