National Kissing Day | June 22

For thousands of years, the kiss has been a part of our culture for thousands of years. Our reasons for kissing are also varied. Though love and admiration are the most common reasons for kissing, the kiss has also been used as a greeting. Kissing a cheek may have a long history in some cultures. The tradition of kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland has existed for centuries and is said to bestow the kisser with the gift of eloquence and persuasiveness. Kissing the feet of royalty or those in power is another medieval tradition that has hopefully has been banished... Kissing the ring of someone to demonstrate fidelity is a similar act of kissing..

Which leads to hand-kissing. Although this gesture demonstrates loyalty to someone, it has a friendlier connotation than that of kissing feet. It's a mark of honor and affection for some.

National Kissing Day has more to teach than a history lesson. It encourages us to reconnect and draw closer to our loved ones. When we get one from someone we love, whether it's a peck on the cheek or a passionate kiss, kissing brings joy. Kissing triggers the release of endorphins, which in turn tells our brain that it is healthy. Our fear of anxiety is reduced when we kiss, and our blood pressure decreases as well. Maybe those boo-boo kisses from mom have some real heft.
