The rubber ducky (also spelled duckie) has come a long way from his first idea as a chew toy for children.. Though the origins of the first rubber ducky is uncertain, several rubber molded toys were available in the late 1800s when rubber manufacturing began in the late 1800s. They made a variety of toys from dolls to various animal shapes, including the rubber duck.

Landon Smart Lawrence was granted the first patent for a rubber duck toy in 1928. The toy's clever engineering weighed it down so that when it tipped it back to an upright position. The patent had a sketch of a duck, which was included in the illustration.

Rubber was a valuable commodity during World Wars I and II. The rubber ducky was first required by law by the 1940s, with the introduction of plastic, and rubber duckys began being made in vinyl and plastic.
