When is National Strawberry Day?

We continue with February's heart-shaped and red theme by commemorating National Strawberry Day on February 27th. These ripe, sweet berries can make any dish look brighter and are delectable on their own.

There are a few other tales about the name's origins. According to the more popular version, the berries will fall off the leaves and become "strewn" about the plant. "trewn-berries" became "strawberries" over time. strawberry beds were mulched with straw over the winter, insulating the plants over the winter, keeping weeds at bay during the growing season, and making them easier to harvest. Children in England are woven the berries on grass straws and selling the "straw berries" in their communities, according to another sweet tale.

Berry picking tips:

• Pick berries that are completely ripe. Strawberries don't ripen if picked too early, like bananas or pears, so they won't continue to ripen
