Cornelius Swarth of Troy, New York, was granted his patent for the waffle iron on August 24, 1869. Although waffles existed long before then, the invention made waffles more widely available.

A waffle is a leavened batter or dough that is eaten around the world. The dough bakes in the waffle's characteristic uniform impressed surface when cooked between two patterned plates. Waffles also come in various forms. The resulting waffle will vary by consistency, size, shape, and flavor, depending on the type of batter or iron used.

Around the 14th century, Waffle irons and waffles appeared. The first known waffle dish was penned by an anonymous husband as a series of instructions for his wife. According to the manuscript, Le Ménagier de Paris, each of the four recipes started: each of the four dishes was Le Ménagier de Paris.
