When is Valentine's Day?

Tuesday February 14th

Valentinus, one of the early Christian saints, was born on Valentine's Day, a liturgical celebration of one or two early Christian saints named Valentinus. The tradition of courtly love was then flourishing during the High Middle Ages, and the word of romantic love was first associated with romantic love during the High Middle Ages. During 18th-century England, this day transformed into an event in which couples demonstrated their love for each other by delivering flowers, making confectionery, and sending Valentine cards.

VALENTINE’S DAY – February 14

Ancient history

Who or what was commemorated in mid-February is disputed. Some people are martyred saints by the name of Valentine or Valentinus... The saint who defied a decree by Emperor Claudius II who outlawed marriage for young men because he believed single men were better soldiers, according to the most popular tale. Young lovers would rather be married in secret than have them sneaking around (or believing in the power of love). St. Valentine is the pope's birthday. However, it may have been another Valentine who conducted the marriages, not necessarily another Valentine.' At least two of them were jailed for their conduct, according to either way.

Another possible origin for Valentine's Day takes us back to a pagan festival called Lupercalia.. As a way to discourage participation in the fertility festival, the Christian church celebrated St. Valentine's Day in the middle of February.
