Emojis existed before the emoji, but emoticons existed. Emoticons (emotion + icon) was created as an expression of emotions in the cold hard texts that were uninhabitable of them.

Emoji, a Japanese word, roughly means "picture word" and was created by Shigetaka Kurita in 1990. Kurita would make these picture words a feature on their pagers to make them more obtainable to teens while working for the Japanese telecom company NTT Docomo.
