World Nutella Day honors what happens when hazelnuts and chocolate meet together. Millions of people celebrate on February 5th each year, for example.

WORLD NUTELLA DAY – February 5

It is often said that necessity is the mother of invention... During difficult times, adding hazelnuts when cocoa is difficult to obtain may have been an Italian trick. They made a chocolate and hazelnut paste in the 1800s in Piedmont, northern Italy's northern Italian city, but the cocoa was not present.

Cocoa was also impossible to come by at the end of World War II. Pietro Ferrero, the pastry maker, made loaves of this sweet paste and named it Giandujot. Ferrero Company was established on May 14, 1946, just a few years later.

Ferrero did not introduce the paste in a spreadable form until 1951. We didn't even know the spread by name until 1964, when Ferrero's son Michele gave the jar of creamy hazelnut and cocoa the name Nutella.
