The day is both a call to action and a call to action around the world for vision care. Blindness and vision loss can be reduced by disease prevention. World Sight Day is an initiative that seeks to raise awareness and accessibility to care for those who need services beyond prevention.

285 million people of all ages are visually impaired, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Uncorrected refractive mistakes and cataracts are two common causes of visual impairment. Sadly, 80 percent of all visual impairments are preventable. People with visual impairments who are not able to afford a pair of eyeglasses simply don't have the means to buy two pair of eyeglasses. Many people are unable to afford cataract surgery, or there is no one in their area to perform the procedure.

Of those with visual impairments, 39 million are blind. Blindness is one of the most common causes of blindness. These are some of the most common causes of blindness.
