World Hydrography Day

The importance of surveying and charting bodies of water is highlighted on World Hydrography Day, June 21st. also encourages the general public to learn more about the science of hydrographs.

It's a known fact that 71 percent of the earth is covered with water. Although the majority of the earth's water is found in oceans, rivers, swamps, glaciers, and aquifers, the majority of the water is also found in lakes, rivers, swamps, glaciers, and aquifers. It also exists in the air in the form of water vapor. Water is important for a variety of reasons. Humans and animals would not survive without water, humans, and animals. We also use water for irrigating crops, keeping everything clean, and providing recreational opportunities.

Water also plays a significant role in transportation. Scientists find out detailed information on how to navigate the earth's waterways. This information helps ships and other vessels navigate the waters safely and effectively. This falls under the field of hydrography. These scientists' findings include: The following links are included in the study. The information these scientists are looking for includes:

  • Water depth
  • The seafloor and coastline shape of the seafloor and coastline The seafloor and coastline are shaped by the seafloor and coastline
  • Possible obstructions can be found in the location of potential obstructions.
  • Water bodies' physical characteristics Water bodies' physical characteristics are described

All of this data is used by scientists to create nautical charts. These charts cover 95,000 miles of shoreline. In addition,, the charts cover 3.6 million square nautical miles of waters in the United States alone. Hydrography also helps in other areas other than transportation and navigation. These include seafloor construction, anchoring, determining fish habitats, and laying pipelines and cables.

How to celebrate #worldhydrographyday.

Every year the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) hosts a variety of events that revolve around the annual theme. These include workshops, educational seminars, and conferences. #WorldHydrographyDay is a hashtag on social media.

History of the world hydrography day has a long tradition

In 2005, the IHO established World Hydrography Day. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution that recognized the establishment of this day in the same year.. The date of June 21st coincides with the founding of the IHO in 1921 under the name International Hydrographic Bureau... In 1970, the IHO was changed to the IHO.

The following are past themes for this day:: This day's themes include:

2021: One hundred years of international cooperation in hydrography.

Hydrography is enabling autonomous technologies in 2020.

2019: Hydrographic data fueling marine research....

Bathymetry – the foundation for sustainable seas, oceans, and waterways in 2018.

Mapping our oceans, oceans, and waterways – more important than ever.
