WORLD RED CROSS DAY

Henry Dunant, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement founder who was born on this day in 1828, is born on May 8 every year. The day is designed to broaden the public's knowledge of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The International Committee of the Red Cross was established in Geneva, Switzerland, in the year 1863, as a private group with a mission to provide rapid and effective humanitarian assistance to people in war and disaster-affected areas. According to the human rights legislation, the Red Cross committee consists of 17 and 25 members who are empowered to plan lifesaving activities and protect the victim's reputation on a national and international basis.

Red Crescent Societies are affiliated and work in collaboration with the World Red Cross to support in the movement's operations. In virtually every world region, National Red Crescent societies and Red Cross Societies are present.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international humanitarian movement that was established to safeguard human life and health, ensure equality for all human beings, and reduce and alleviate human suffering.

The red cross on a white background was recognized as the single, distinctive symbol of the First Geneva Convention.. Since the symbol was supposed to represent the neutrality of the military forces medical services and the security they were afforded, the emblem adopted was created by reversing the Swiss flag's colors.

On May 8, 1948, the first Red Cross Day was observed. Over time, the official name of the day has evolved, and in 1984, it became "World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day" in honor of 1984.

Henry Dunant's birth, who was born on May 8th 1828, is commemorated on this date. He was both the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the first Nobel Peace Prize winner.
