World Sea Turtle Day

Sea turtles are one of the most endangered species of sea turtles every year on June 16th. The day also encourages global activists to investigate the dangers that sea turtles face.

Did you know that sea turtles have been on the planet for more than 100 million years? This means that sea turtles coexisted with dinosaurs. There are seven species of sea turtles found in the United States. These include green, hawksbill, Kemp's ridley, leatherback, loggerhead, and the Olive ridley. The leatherback is the most prominent of these species of sea turtles.... Anywhere from 550 to 2,000 pounds, the leatherback sea turtle weighs anywhere from 550 to 2,000 pounds. This species of sea turtle grows up to six feet in length. Sea turtles live in both fresh and warm waters around the world. The flatback can only be found in Australia, however, the flatback can only be found in Australia.

Sea turtle facts

  • Sea turtles can live from 50 to 100 years
  • Some sea turtles can travel more than 1,000 miles to return to their nesting ground
  • Sea turtles nest multiple times, about two weeks apart, and lay up to 125 eggs per nest
  • Most sea turtles nest at night, except for the Kemp's ridley
  • The Leatherback sea turtles can dive nearly 4,000 feet into the sea, while Leatherback sea turtles can dive nearly 4,000 feet into the water
  • Unlike other species of turtles, sea turtles are unable to recover into their shells
  • A large group of nesting sea turtles is called an "arribadas," which is Spanish for "arrival"

One more surprising fact is that the nest's temperature determines the sea turtle's sex. In cooler weather, male hatchlings are born. When the weather in the next season is warm, it produces female hatchlings. Whether the weather in the next is warm. A mixture of male and female baby sea turtles is found in a fluctuating temperature.

Unfortunately, nearly every species of sea turtle is listed as endangered. Both the hawksbills and Kemp's ridley are seriously endangered. Entanglement, habitat destruction, and poaching for meat and eggs are among the most common reasons for their endangerment.
